Wednesday 18th September: Day One
Session One: Sustainability Best-Practices
The opening session discussed some of the major ethical
and ecological issues facing the Latin American cosmetics industry, highlighting industry
best-practices. Following a description of the sustainability
challenges, a multinational shared its experiences in implementing its
sustainability plan across a diverse range of operations. With growing
pressure on companies to take steps against climate change, a cosmetics
firm gave details of its carbon management plan: how can companies
measure, reduce and offset their carbon emissions?
Latin American companies face many legal obstacles when exporting
cosmetics, especially to Europe. An update was given of the regulatory
environment for cosmetics, including implications of new cosmetic
directives. In light of the recent EU ban on animal-tested ingredients
and cosmetics, another paper discussed alternatives to animal-testing
methods. The panel discussion had featured speakers discussing methods
of improving the ethical value of cosmetics.
Session Two: Green Formulations
This session covered
major advances in green formulations, focusing on major ingredients. A
global update was given on natural & organic cosmetic standards,
highlighting key certification developments. A Brazilian natural
cosmetics company shared its experiences with green formulations,
specifically how it formulates without synthetic materials.
Other papers discussed emerging natural actives, sustainability issues
associated with fragrances, the use of vegetable oils in formulations
and novel extraction methods. The growing use of food ingredients in
cosmetic applications was also explored. Featured speakers form a panel
at the end of the session to discuss the environmental footprint of
green ingredients.
Thursday 19th September: Day Two
Session Three: Marketing Innovations
Many argue that effective marketing can make the
difference between business success and failure, especially for new
product launches. This session covered important marketing developments,
focusing on technology. The premier speaker stressed the growing
importance of transparency in marketing communications in this digital
age.
With much hype about Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, an expert highlighted
the opportunities provided to cosmetic brands. How can brands tap the
potential of social media and digital marketing? The subsequent paper
discussed the growing use of E-Commerce and M-commerce by consumers.
Other speakers covered the global market for sustainable cosmetics,
sustainability communications, and targeting the green consumer. A
leading Brazilian retailer shared its experiences in tackling the
ecological and social challenges of sustainability.
Session Four: Sustainable Packaging
The packaging impact is often ignored by cosmetic
companies when they look at sustainability. This session looked at
the various ways cosmetic companies can reduce their packaging
footprint, addressing questions such as: what are the possibilities
to replace plastics in packaging? How can advances in design
approach reduce the environmental footprint of packaging? What are
some of the success stories in cosmetic packaging for
sustainability?
The opening paper shared some Life-Cycle Analyses on the packaging
footprint of cosmetic products. Other papers covered eco-design, novel materials and case studies. Featured speakers discussed the possibility to innovate using sustainable
packaging: can novel packaging materials or design encourage
innovation?
Friday 20th September: Day Three
Workshop I: Safety Assessment of Botanical Ingredients in Cosmetics
The use of natural raw materials in cosmetic
formulations brings many challenges. Apart from issues concerning
efficacy and stability of formulations, the safety assessment of such
raw materials is often questioned. This workshop focused on the safety
assessment issues concerning natural cosmetic ingredients, focusing on
botanical materials.
The workshop leader looked at the process of evaluating cosmetic
ingredients for safety and the data required. Guidance was given to
formulators and product developers looking to develop or select natural
ingredients that are safe and harmless.
Workshop II: Sustainability in Packaging
Although packaging has high environmental impact,
few cosmetic companies have taken steps to reduce their packaging
footprint. New design approaches and green materials are giving
rise to a range of sustainable packaging solutions.
This workshop helped cosmetic companies reduce
their environmental impact by adopting sustainable packaging
solutions. Some of the solutions covered include recycling,
eco-design, upcycling, bioplastics and sustainable materials. Case
studies were given of cosmetic products adopting novel forms of
sustainable packaging.
